Kaumarabhritya Department


Kaumarabhritya is an important branch of Ayurveda. It is known as ayurvedic pediatric. Previously it was running along with Prasuti , Stri and Bal rog dept. In 2009 it was established as independent department of Kaumarabhritya (Bal Roga). In 2015 Post graduation course was introduced in the department. The department provides complete care and treatment of children from birth upto 16 years of life. OPD & IPD of the department is dealt with expertise consultants & managed by resident doctors and nursing staff.

  • Specific Bal-Panchkarma treatment protocols established by the department for different diseases.
  • Yoga training for children’s in various disease like- Bronchial Asthma, DMD etc.

Department of Kaya Chikitsa is one of the oldest clinical departments at State Ayurvedic College, Lucknow. Besides offering teaching and training of Ayurvedic clinical medicine to the BAMS final year students, this department looks after the patient care through its routine OP and IP services through the associated hospital . Kaya Chikitsa Department at SAC, Lucknow has a focused care approach in variety of clinical conditions namely Diabetes, Arthritis and Skin diseases. The department also runs a PG Program where MD (Ay) students are given teaching and training in various disciplines of Kaya Chikitsa. So far the department has produced 193 MDs and 40 PhDs in Kaya Chikitsa. Many important research works have been carried out so far by the department in past many years. Ongoing researches in the department being taken up by running batches of MD Kaya Chikitsa students are appended below.

Department of Kaya Chikitsa is highly conductive to cross disciplinary and inter disciplinary research by associating researchers and scientists from various fields and institutions from Lucknow. Most prominent among such research collaborators are the premier research institutions of Lucknow of national importance like KGMU, NBRI, CDRI, CIMAP and Biotech Park etc. The department runs various academic activities throughout the year for the benefit of students, faculty members and patients. This includes seminars, workshops, and medical camps done on various occasions. Department also runs a Chikitsa Parishad which is a representative body of BAMS final year students aiming to promote academic activities related to Kaya Chikitsa during BAMS studies.

Department of Panchkarma was established as an independent Department in year 2009 as per CCIM norms. In this department Shodhan (Detoxification) is done by five karmas i.e. 1. Vaman, 2. Virechan, 3. Nirooha, 4. Anuvasan, 5. Nasya

Special Therapies:

  1. Prasava Karma (प्रसव कर्म):

    It is the process occurring in a pregnant lady at term, leading to child birth. Ayurvedic antenatal care may facilitate labour and brings it out as easy and normal delivery (Sukha-Prasava). It also helps to have a healthy and genetically improved progeny (Supraja).

  2. Yonidhavana (योनि धावन) :

    It is vaginal douche with different kind of herbal decoctions as per disease.Total time consumed in the procedure: 10-15 minutes.

  3. Garbhashayagata Uttar Basti (गर्भाशयगत उत्तरबस्ति)

    The Basti which is given in Upper (Uttara) passage i.e. urinary or vaginal than usual (anal) passage or it is superior in qualities, thus, is termed as Uttara Basti. Uttara Basti is given in uterus through vagina in married women only. Sneha or Kvatha, preferably Sneha is more useful in most of the diseases of Garbhasaya. It is mainly indicated in infertility, menstrual disorders etc.

    Total time consumed in the procedure: 25-30 minutes

  4. Mutrashayagata Uttar Basti (मुत्राशयगत उत्तरबस्ति)

    It is the same as above except the path of medicine administration is urinary pathway. It is mainly indicated in urinary incontinence etc.

  5. Anuvasana (Matra) Basti (अनुवासन / मात्राबस्ति )

    Ayurvedic Basti involves the introduction of herbal substances like oil and decoction etc into the rectum. Basti, is the most effective treatment of Vata disorders like Infertility, Menstrual disorders, Backache etc. In Anuvasana/ Matra Basti medicated oils are used as per disease.

    Quantity of medicated oil should be 50-200 ml.

    Total time consumed in the procedure: 25-30 minutes

  6. Asthapana Basti (आस्थापन बस्ति )

    It is administration of decoction based preparation of medicines into the rectum. It is indicated in Infertility, Menstrual disorders, Backache, Vata predominant diseases etc.

    Quantity of medicated oil should be 500-700 ml.

    Total time consumed in the procedure: 25-30 minutes

  7. Kshara Karma (क्षार कर्म )

    Kshara Karma is indicated mainly in cervical erosion (Karnini). Kshara is applied over the eroded cervix and left for 10 minutes. After becoming red (Jambuphal Pakva Sadrisham), it is washed with lime water or normal saline. Then a Pichu impregnated with Ropan Shashank (ointment) or Jatyadi Taila is applied over it.

    Total time consumed in the procedure: 15-20 minutes

  8. Pichu (पिछु )

    A thick swab/ cotton pad (Kavalika) is called Pichu. Pichu is a process in which a piece of cloth, gauze or linen is soaked in the medicated ghee or oil and placed high in vagina near cervix. It is indicated in cervical erosion, prolapse and also used as after procedure of Uttara Basti, Yoni Dhavana, Kshara Karma etc.

    Total time consumed in the procedure: 05-10 minutes.

  9. Pottali (पोट्टली )

    In this procedure desired herbal powders with medicated oils and honey in form of paste (Kalka) is tied in a gauze and prepared in form of small Pottali and placed high in vagina near cervix. It is indicated in Uterine Prolapse, Vaginal laxity etc

  10. Garbhini Paricharya (गर्भिनी परिचर्या )

    सामान्य गर्भिनी परिचर्या - It is general antenatal care provided during pregnancy at regular interval.

    विशिष्ट गर्भिनी परिचर्या - It is special Ayurvedic regime provided during pregnancy including specific diet and life style modules which in turn helps in normal delivery and healthy progeny.

  11. Sutika Paricharya (सूतिका परिचर्या )

    It is postnatal care of women provided after delivery. The body of Sutika is empty (Shoonya) due to exertion of labour pains & loss of blood and water & there is a profuse Dhatukshaya (nutritional deficiency) due to development of foetus. That’s why her body is prone to several diseases. So, proper Ayurvedic treatments improve her physiological condition and also protect her from the upcoming diseases.

  12. Dressing (Vrana Shodhan & Prasadana)

    It is wound dressing using herbal decoctions and medicated oils.

  • Infertility (बन्ध्यत्व )
  • White Discharge (श्वेत प्रदर )
  • Menstrual disorders like DUB, oligomenorrhea, dysmenorrhea etc (अतर्वदुश्ति)
  • Uterine Fibroids (गर्भशय अबुर्द)
  • PCOD/ Ovarian cyst (अन्दशय विकार)
  • Genital tract infections like PID , Vulvovaginitis etc (श्रोणिशोथ,योनीश्रोत)
  • Breast diseases (स्तनरोग )
  • Genital prolapse (भ्रंश)
  • Systemic diseases like Obesity etc (स्थौल्योथ)

Department Of Rog Nidan Avm Vikriti Vigya


U.G. Deptt. of Rog Nidan was established in 1972 in the State Ayurvedic College & Hospital, Lucknow. Here Professor, Reader and Lecturers are appointed as teaching faculty for both U.G.Dept. of Rog Nidan. There is well established library in the deptt. for all the U.G.. scholars where different books, journals, articles related to Rog Nidan are available in the departmental library. In addition to it there is Biochemistry lab, Haematology lab is well equipped in the deptt. Where different practical are carried out by students under the supervision of teachers and lab attendants for better research work.
